Thriving Through the Evolution of Graphic Design

I’ve been self-employed for most of my 25+ years in the design industry, which means I’ve created far more projects than I could ever show here! To keep things fresh, I’ve included a curated snapshot of my work rather than letting it get repetitive. Over the years, my professional motto has always been: "I Make Small Business Look BIG."

Thanks to wonderful client referrals, I’ve had the opportunity to dive into an incredibly diverse mix of industries—from food and beverage and healthcare tech to autism educational support and spiritual tele-summit marketing, as well as travel to other locations across the border. While these industries sound large, most were small startups when we met. I loved watching them thrive and expand over time, and I still firmly believe that no job is too small.

Because this online gallery represents my 25-year career journey, you'll see how styles have shifted over time. Like fashion, design trends change, and I always thoroughly research today's market before diving into a new project. When we work together, I focus deeply on the specific feelings you want your graphics to evoke, ensuring your brand looks contemporary, polished, and ready to compete.

Putting a Face to my Resume!

The 1st Edition Cover of Bob Proctor's Classic "You Were Born Rich" Was My Work!

If you are familiar with the 1980s personal development movement, you know names like Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, and Bob Proctor. Bob passed away in February 2022, leaving behind a massive legacy that truly began with his breakout book, You Were Born Rich.

Early in my career, while partnering with a local photographer, a colleague referred Bob to me to design his new book cover (they added the "You Were" on the next printing) . The result—a rare first-edition print—is featured here in my portfolio under "Books"

The project came with an unbelievable twist. Shortly after completing it, I visited my parents, who surprisingly handed me a physical copy of the book before it had even hit mainstream shelves. As it turned out, my parents' close friend was Bob’s aunt.

She revealed that his family initially thought he was throwing his career away when he resigned as a Fire Chief to pursue public speaking. Ultimately, Bob built a multi-million-dollar empire and proved his doubters wrong. It really is a small world.

I Accidentally Mastered Google’s Algorithm!

In 1998, fresh out of a computer graphics advancement program, I launched my first design website, SusanHiltonGraphicArtist.com. At a time when search engines were still in their infancy, I consistently branded myself online using the keyword phrase "Susan Hilton, Graphic Artist."

This early, organic branding strategy inadvertently triggered Google’s algorithm, landing my website on the first page of global search results for the term "Graphic Artist." This exceptional visibility attracted prestigious, long-term US clients such as Aho Consulting and BPR—partnerships that successfully endured for more than ten years.

Though search engine dynamics eventually evolved, capturing a top-tier organic ranking during the dawn of the internet remains a proud and formative milestone in my professional journey.

A 100% Referral-Driven Career

My career grew entirely through the power of momentum. Pivoting into computer graphics was a true turning point for my family; it gave me the cutting-edge skills needed to build a thriving business right from home, allowing me to fully support my child as a single mother. From that foundation, every contract I completed seemed to organically spawn new opportunities. Early on, designing a single restaurant menu quickly led to inquiries from several other local eateries looking to elevate their branding.

This pattern of referral-driven success eventually took my career international. A family friend working for a Utah-based MLM startup introduced me to one of their top distributors. She was so impressed with my designs that she sponsored my TN Visa, allowing me to relocate to Utah to support her branding full-time. When she later transitioned to a new venture, her network opened doors for me to relocate to Florida, where I spent a few years handling design strategy for another top tier of the organization.

That momentum never stopped. A colleague from my Utah days approached me to lead the visual launch of a brand-new MLM corporate startup. Around the same time, my personal interest in the metaphysical led me to complete a program at a mystery school in Florida. After returning to Ontario when my visa concluded, the school's founder hired me to overhaul his digital presence.

Through him, I was introduced to a promoter who booked speakers onto "telesummits"—the premier phone-based infomercials of the era. I designed the product mockups and MP3 album covers for his sales packages. The telesummit organizers were so impressed with the visual polish that they hired me directly and referred me to their entire roster of guest speakers. That thriving network kept my pipeline full until my retirement in 2017. Throughout my entire career, I took immense pride in living up to my professional slogan: I Make Small Business LOOK BIG!
